We've thought about the farm concept on and off for years. Even when we were younger and we thought about ';winning the 10 million dollar lottery and buying a farm';, we've concluded that we need a functioning farm with farm hands. If not, we concluded that we needed to hire a farm hand/farm manager BEFORE going out and buying a farm.

There is such a thing called ';farm internships'; of some sort. You might check out cityfarmer.org for some links. I'm pretty sure that's where I first read about farming internships.

Exactly what can survive and not survive on a farm has quite a bit to do with where your farm is. Despite what type of farm you decide to have, it still relies on the local environment, climate, and weather conditions. Animal or agricultural based, soil and water conditions are also important. If your ';product'; cannot survive, you cannot make any type of money on it. Assuming you can get your product to ';maturity';, identifying a market, identifying a buyer and selling it, and then getting it to market in good shape are only a part of the business side of farming. Farmers ';get'; to provide their own labor 10 plus hours a day and then and their own business expertise for a few more later on in their free time.

Are you fully in the middle of an inner-city? If not, you might want to see what you can find out about either 4-H and/or Future Farmers of America in your area. Also, in terms of considering the realities of a ';farm'; you might want to go to the Small Business Administration (SBA) site and seriously check out their business plan pages. Start making a business plan for a potential farm.

On a more personal level, start asking yourself why you want a farm. What is it that attracts you to the concept of a farm? Write down both general and specific reasons. What you envision for farm life may lead you better to the type of farm you really want. You may find that rather than working a farm as a primary income, you would prefer to work a farm as a secondary income and life style. If so, now is the time to start preparing yourself for an income that will support a farm and life-style you envision; this says college and a decent income for many. It also says something that will either give you enough time for and/or enough money to hire farm labor. And, it says something that can earn an income in affordable farm country. Or, you may find that a couple of acres will give you the self sufficentcy, a little extra income, atmosphere, and life-style you're seeking.I need advice on how to prepare to buy a farm when i get older?
Steven has the right idea. You have to get the experience before you start investing money and changing your way of life. You will learn how much work it is to care for whatever is raised, where to sell, how much you can make, what your costs are, and whether it will be possible to get out of debt before you die.
Make a start now- go work on a farm and you will learn the best way-first hand.
get used to the smell of manure
